Is your toothbrush in good shape? We hope most people will brush at least twice a day, but you need a decent toothbrush to do the job properly. Toothbrushes don’t have to be expensive to be effective.
Which is the Best Type of Toothbrush?
It might be tempting to think you will clean your teeth more effectively with a hard bristled brush but you will do a better job with a soft to medium bristled toothbrush. You do not need to brush very hard as it is more about technique than force. Brushing too hard can damage your gums and tooth enamel. It is your choice as to whether you choose an electric or manual brush as both will do an equally good job when properly used, however we find that most patients do best with electric toothbrushes.
Are You Brushing for Long Enough?
You need to brush for two minutes each time and it is surprisingly easy to underestimate. If you use an electric brush then it probably has a built in timer, but if you prefer a manual brush then think about having a small timer in the bathroom.
Change Your Toothbrush Frequently
You should ditch your old brush every three months or more frequently if it looks worn or if the bristles are splayed. A new toothbrush will remove plaque more effectively than an old worn out brush.
Caring for Your Brush
Toothbrushes can harbour millions of bacteria and they are the ideal breeding ground when wet. Make sure you store your brush somewhere it can dry naturally and quickly. Ensure it doesn’t touch anyone else’s brush as you will transfer germs. Keep your brush as far away as you can from the toilet bowl and make sure the seat is down when you flush as this can disperse bacteria into the air where they could land on your toothbrush.
