What happens if my gummy smile is due to something different?

A gummy smile may be caused by an excess of gum tissue covering up your front teeth, but this isn’t always the reason. Sometimes a gummy smile is due to an overactive facial muscle in your upper lip. Whenever you smile or talk, the muscle contracts too much, exposing an excess of gum tissue. A very gentle and non-invasive way to correct this type of gummy smile is to use muscle relaxing injections. These allow your upper lip muscle to relax, so you no longer look gummy. We prefer to take a ‘less is more’ approach with facial injectables, as our dentist will only use minuscule amounts of high quality muscle relaxing injections to create a natural effect.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

What is Gum Reshaping?

Gum reshaping is a cosmetic dental technique to carefully re-contour the appearance of your gums so they nicely frame your teeth and will enhance your appearance. Ideally, you should only show a small amount of gum tissue when you smile or talk, but some people will show an excess of gum. This is called a ‘gummy smile’ and is frequently due to teeth being covered up with too much gum tissue. The teeth underneath may be exactly the right length and just need to be uncovered to reveal their natural shape and size. It might only be necessary to reshape the gums around one or two teeth, or if needed we can recontour all teeth that are visible when smiling.

Treating a Gummy Smile with Laser Dentistry

If you have a gummy smile, our dentist will gently examine your mouth to determine the reason and to see if recontouring your gums is the most appropriate treatment. Gum reshaping is precisely planned so we will only remove as much tissue as needed to cosmetically improve your smile. Treatment is provided using a dental laser to carefully remove only excess tissue, creating a more balanced appearance. Laser dentistry is a more comfortable form of treatment as it is extremely precise, so healing is faster and any side-effects are minimal.

Treating a Gummy Smile with Facial Injectables

Sometimes a gummy smile is due to an overactive muscle in the upper lip which is called the Levator Labii Superioris Alaequi Nasi muscle. This muscle pulls the lip upwards, exposing too much gum. Minute amounts of high-quality facial injectables are carefully administered to reduce the activity of this muscle so you will show precisely the right amount of gum tissue when talking and smiling.
