Dental Extraction | Dental Extraction
If a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay, the team at Apple Dental will try to fix your tooth with either a restorative filing or crown. Sometimes though, there's too much damage for the tooth to be repaired and saved, and this is when a tooth will be extracted (removed).

There are two types of extractions:

  • A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that can be "seen" in the mouth and does not show any clinical abnormalities. Most of these extractions can be done using local anesthetic to numb the tooth and soft tissues; and are performed quickly and comfortably.
  • A surgical extraction involves teeth that cannot be "seen" as easily in the mouth, as they may have broken off at the gum line or may not have fully erupted into the mouth (are submerged under the gum line).
  • In a lot of cases, surgical extractions require some bone grafting, to replace the bone that has been lost during the tooth removal procedure. Bone is regenerative, which means that it will grow back in its own time in the void where the bone has been lost. At Apple Dental we may also recommended a bone graft, whereby immediately following a tooth extraction, bone mineral, either artificial or freeze dried bovine origin, is placed into the empty space after an extraction. This ensures that bone shrinkage, a common consequence of dental extractions, is minimised. This is ideal for the placement of dental implants, which rely on good bone structure, height and density to help ensure the success of the dental implant procedure. Dental Implants bond to the bone, and become a solid fixture. For the implant to be a fixed restoration, that bone must be of adequate height.

At Apple Dental, we can perform all these types of tooth extraction and procedures. They are done in the chair using local anaesthetic to make the visit more comfortable. With some of the more complex cases however, we will refer you to our recommended Oral Surgeon who will perform the extraction and apply the bone graft.
